Are your ingredients organic?
Yes! We source responsibly farmed and harvested ingredients. For us, that means supporting organic and biodynamic farmers. Research shows that organic crops have higher levels of antioxidants and supporting organic farming supports species diversity, carbon storage, and healthy water systems. All wild ingredients are harvested responsibly for regenerative harvest management. We’re big farmer’s market people and in our experience, organic produce from small farms tastes the best. We wanted to bring this approach to skincare.
Do your products have preservatives?
No preservatives here! Our small batch, cold mechanical production helps retain the antioxidants in our plant ingredients. And the antioxidants act as natural preservatives. Many skincare products use synthetic preservatives. You’ve probably heard of parabens, sulphates, BHT and BHA. These and other synthetic preservatives are associated with cancers and endocrine system disruption.
What is the shelf life of your products?
We recommend using within 12 months of receiving the products.
How is the giant kelp harvested?
Our giant kelp is wild harvested once a year for responsible regenerative harvest management by a small artisan producer.
Why glass packaging?
We wanted to design a bottle that would look great on your shelf and be a joy to use and reuse. We are so tired of single use plastics. Only 9% of plastics ever made have been recycled. Every year, 8 million metric tons of plastic enter our ocean. And this is on top of the estimated 150 million metric tons that currently circulate in our marine environments. Our glass bottles are meant to be refilled and enjoyed for a long time. Check out our refill program to keep it rolling. At the end of its life, glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity.
Speaking of reusing… do you offer refills?
Yes! We offer our products in compostable refill pouches. The refill pouch is made from cellulose and is ASTM D6400 certified compostable. If your municipality accepts compostable plastics, you can simply rinse the package and put it into your residential compost container. It will break down to carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds and biomass at the same rate as other organic materials in the compost pile, leaving no toxic residue. Pretty neat!
If your municipality does not accept compostable plastics, select the option “refill pouch with return envelope” above and we’ll include a postage-paid envelope (available in Canada only). You can return the empty, rinsed and dried pouch to us and we’ll compost it. Just pop the envelope into your neighborhood mailbox.
You can even put our compostable pouches in your backyard compost pile/bin. Compost piles/bins should be maintained so they have adequate moisture, nutrients, and organisms to allow the bags to break down more quickly than if they were just buried in the ground. We recommend that you cut open the pouch and give it a good rinse before you put the pouch in the compost.
We’re always on the lookout for alternatives to single-use plastics. Our product and shipping boxes are made from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified cardboard and printed with water soluble inks. That means it is sourced from a forest and supply chain that is managed responsibly and sustainably. Cardboard is neat because it is genuinely recyclable and it’s also compostable.
How do you give back?
We are proudly part of 1% for the Planet. That means 1% of every sale goes directly to non profit environmental organizations. Did you know that 1% for the Planet members have given back more than $265 million to the environment? We’re excited to partner with Raincoast Conservation, a fantastic organization that uses peer-reviewed science and community engagement to protect the lands, waters and wildlife of coastal British Columbia.
